The Ever Present Past

September 25, 2012

“…I know that it’s not easy,
To be calm when you’ve found

something going on.
But take your time, think a lot,
Why, think of everything you’ve got.
For you will still be here tomorrow,

but your dreams may not.”

-Cat Stevens, Father & Son

The core of a place always stays the same. I was born and raised in the same place. I left, more than once, but here I am–back again. It has grown as I’ve grown. Some good, some bad. People have come, people have gone, and others have kept on going steady.

Like places,  people come and go in your life, but you are always that same core person. When certain people are in the midst of your life, time seems endless–like they will be there forever, but then they’re gone.  Gone for some significant or insignificant reason, in the end that’s not what’s important. They remain in your heart but no longer show up on the radar that is your here and now.

When someone can’t be who you want them to be or you can’t be who they want you to be –what can you do? Sometimes you hope and dream of who they could be, but the reality is never the truth. So, instead of being a part of the here and now, they remain burned into a spot in your heart and memory forever–fading through time, but never quite disappearing…
