7 Key Plus Size Basics

October 25, 2012

Every clothing closet should have it’s basics. The plus size gal’s closet is a little different, but this is an option for any size.  Here are some key basics that I keep handy in my wardrobe. I am continually replenishing and replacing worn out items.

These basics are key to pair with fashion pieces, to complement an ensemble, or be your go to items for days when you want to go simple.

7 Basics for a Plus Size Closet

  1.    Well Fitting Bra

Every shape and size needs a well fitting bra. This can make or break you. Or more importantly make you look fatter or slimmer on your top half. You want a smooth back and sides, and a large enough cup so that you don’t runneth over. It is good to have a skin colored bra and a black bra for your basics.

Consider going to your local intimates shop (Cacique? Nordstrom?) to have a bra fitting. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this or don’t have a local store, try having someone help you take your bra measurements. Check out these following videos for help on finding a well fitting bra.

  2.    Shapewear

Like a well fitting bra, every girl needs a good pair of high waist shapewear panties–minimum You don’t have to wear them everyday, but there is always going to be that item you come across that may need that extra help.

  3.    Black Tights / Nylons

Black tights or nylons that have a control top are  something you should always have. If it’s cold or you don’t feel like showing off your legs, this is a good alternative. An added bonus–they help combat thigh chaffing.

If you have problems with cottage cheese, but really want to wear that dress–consider buying a pair of nude nylons. They will make your legs look firmer and smoother.

  4.    Neutral Tanks

I like to have at least a black, white, and grey/charcoal tank top ready in my ward robe. They are great for layering or covering up cleavage when needed.

  5.    Black Leggings

Black leggings are great to use for layering, as faux “tights” tucked into boots,  and make comfortable lounge pants.

  6.    Neutral Cardigan

A cardigan can bring a warm weather item into fall or winter as a layering piece. They can also be good for those who aren’t comfortable showing off too much arm. I usually have at least a black and grey cardigan laying around at all times.

For warm weather, try shopping for a short sleeve cardigan or shrug.

  7.     Jeans

When I say jeans (or they can be jeggings), I mean a nice fitting pair. Not too tight, not too long, hugs your body in all the right places, and most importantly–doesn’t give you any muffin tops or love handles. Remember size is only a number, and sometimes it is better to get over our ego and go for that larger size. In the long run, if your jeans fit you better than you will look slimmer–even if they number is bigger.

I am always on the look out for that perfect pair.  Jeans are always a great piece to dress up or down. They, also, can be worn year round for most people and places.

… Interpretation…

These are a guide to basics for your closet. Remember to adapt for your body type and interpret for your own style.

Do you have a basic that you have as a regular part of your wardrobe? I’d love to hear your ideas!
